The Beginning

From the Forest Floor Up

Meet David Lyons. His background is genuinely mixed: years in emergency healthcare across hospitals and community settings, twenty years running an IT business, time teaching in clinical settings. None of it was a straight line to running tours in a rainforest.

But it gave him something useful. David knows how to stay calm when things don't go to plan, and how to build systems that work. And after years of teaching, he knows the difference between someone who genuinely knows their subject and someone who doesn't.

David came to the Wet Tropics and fell in love with it: the birds, the forest, the feeling of a place that exists nowhere else on Earth. The mission became clear quickly: show as many people as possible how extraordinary this region is, through the birds and wildlife, with guides who have real depth in their field.

That's what we curate: the right guide for the right experience, with the logistics, timing, access and contingencies handled properly. We're a fully accredited and insured operator.

You've travelled a long way. We won't waste your time.

“A request from a visiting birder became the catalyst for developing dedicated Wet Tropics birding expeditions. That single request reshaped the direction of the business.”

Our Guides

The Guides

Every experience is led by someone with genuine depth in their field. Here's who you'll be in the forest with.

Les Anwyl | Rainforest Botany & Ecology

Les has lived in Kuranda for decades. His background in botany and science education, combined with years learning from Indigenous elders across northern Australia, makes a walk with him unlike anything else available in the region.

As Les puts it: this forest has been feeding and healing people for thousands of years. Most visitors walk straight past the evidence.

How We Operate

Three Things We Don't Compromise On

Timing Over Convenience

Wildlife doesn't work around check-in times. Dawn departures, flexible scheduling, and real-time routing based on conditions and recent sightings. If something exceptional is happening in a particular location that morning, we go there.

Permits & Access

Much of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area needs permits to access properly. We hold the permits and approvals to operate across its national parks, and we know where to be, and when.

Six Guests Per Vehicle

Not a marketing number. Six per vehicle is the threshold for quiet forest movement, genuine wildlife encounters, and the kind of flexibility that makes the difference between a good tour and an exceptional one. Larger groups travel in a second vehicle.
