Your day, hour by hour

  1. 08:25

Kuranda Scenic Railway, Cairns to Kuranda

The classic climb from Cairns to Kuranda. The line was cut by hand in the 1880s and still runs through fifteen tunnels and across the Stoney Creek Falls bridge, with the Barron Gorge opening up below you the whole way. We are waiting on the platform when you arrive.

  2. 10:30

    Village orientation

A short loop of the village to get your bearings. You will see where the markets sit, where the walking tracks start, and which end of town is worth your afternoon.

    Barron Falls Photo Stop

We'll pull in at the Barron Falls lookout for a few minutes, with time to take in the gorge and grab a photo before we carry on.

    Jumrum Creek Walk

A rainforest track along Jumrum Creek, all on the flat and easy underfoot. We drop you at one end and meet you at the other, so it is a straight walk through with a rest at the creek midway and no doubling back. Watch for Ulysses butterflies and listen for whipbirds.

    Kuranda Koala Gardens

A boutique wildlife park in the heart of the village. Pat a koala for a souvenir photo, hand feed the wallabies and pademelons, and see wombats, quokkas and the nocturnal house with bilbies and gliders.

    Lunch

We'll pause for a relaxed lunch in Kuranda, with meals and refreshments supplied, so you can take the middle of the day at your own pace.

    Kuranda Markets

Time to wander the Kuranda markets. The Original Rainforest Market and the Heritage Market sit a few minutes apart, both full of local makers, bush foods and craft you will not find down in town.

  8. 15:00

    Kuranda Range Scenic Drive

The way home is down the Kuranda Range, one of the best short drives in the country. You get the story of how the road was built, the gorge it clings to, and the view back over Cairns and the reef as you drop out of the rainforest.
